Twilight: The time before sunrise or after sunset where both the sun and moon appear at the same time. I don’t know why it’s titled that, but who cares? It was really nice. Why would I review it if I didn’t like it?
I think everyone knows what it is about. Here’s the simplified version: Girl moved into new town. Girl meets boy. Boy turns out to be a vampire, as well as his family but they are good ones. Their love is forbidden. Then got some bad vampires who wanted the girl. Damsel in distress moment where guy saved the girl. Then everything is well again, yadda yadda. It’s based on the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer, hailed as the next Harry Potter. Well, it didn’t really reach that level yet, but it came quite close. The books were bestsellers and the movie broke box office record. And the hype is not just hype either…
I actually quite liked it. For a teen sappy romance, it was nice. The chemistry between Bella and Edward was really there. It was not forced or faked, but really natural. Plus, the visual was amazing. the forest scenery was breathtaking. And the subtle visual effects were enough. There’s no need for $150 million SFX budget. The music was also beautiful (I absolutely love Clair de Lune). And the people there were just as beautifu (I used beautiful a lot in this post…)l. The vampires were supposed to be inhumanly beautiful (pardon the pun), but I still think Bella trumps them all. She was like a young, brunette Nicole Kidman. Pale beyond belief, ethereal. If only she (Kristen Stewart) can act. She was really stoic and emotionless. Well, I didn’t say it was the best movie ever (the screaming teen girls who shrieked and swooned everytime Edward came on screen said that). The storyline was cliched (star-crossed love. How many of those have we seen since Romeo and Juliet?), and aside from bad actings, there are some shoddy directing also. But the end result is good enough pleased casual fans and non-fan viewers (The hardcore fans and haters are impossible).
So, head on to your nearest cinema now and watch it. Or better yet, read the book first, that is if you can find it. Yesterday, I went to four (!) bookstores and can’t find it. Sold out apparently. Can you believe that? Never undermine the influence of moving pictures…and screaming teen girls. Nevermine, I’ll keep looking for it (I dont want the movie version novelisation). In the meantime, give the movie a shot. It’s not as bad as the critics made it out to be.
Next movies on my must-watch list are Benjamin Button and Australia. Both will be released in December here. Now I’m just enjoying my holidays. Two weeks! (Yah, I know. Pathetically short). Who wants to go out? Come la jalan. Loren, balik la cepat. Ray, lama tdk nampak ko. Ameline, others (I dont know who else reads this), looking forward to see you guys…I’m bored. I cant online/read/watch tv all the time…
